about

ALL PROCEEDS GO TO TALLAGHT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

“Same as it ever was?” is the result of a health & education project designed to find out what reasons people have in common for having favourite songs – songs that have real, strong meaning for them – and to use the exploration of those commonalities as a way of encouraging greater communication between generations. Participants were asked to share one or two favourite songs and the reasons why these songs were special to them. Despite the difference in age and musical taste of the people Rónán Collins and I spoke to (namely, students and their grandparents or parents), common themes arose as to why certain songs were important – nostalgia for special moments or things, loss, and affirmation that it’s OK to be different, being principal among them.
Once we had identified these common factors, I wanted to write some songs which reflected and expanded upon them, in order to bring the project and its ideas to a wider public. I asked my long-time collaborator, poet Helen Pizzey, if she would write some poems/song lyrics on these various subjects, having informed her about on the details of the project. As usual, I was delighted with Helen’s texts, her gift of always getting to the heart of the matter as sharply honed as ever.

I set about writing the songs once I had received Helen’s texts. I knew that for this project I wanted to work with the wonderful Irish vocalist Lauren Kinsella, who I had previously worked with when she sang in two experimental improvised operas of mine. When I mentioned I had guitar and bass in mind as the accompanying instruments Lauren suggested Chris Montague and Conor Chaplin, two excellent musicians based, like her, in London (although Conor was born in Cork).
The trio performed the songs in the two schools the project had been to and a couple of weeks later we went into the studio to put them down properly for this CD.

I am grateful to Lauren, Chris and Conor for all their work on the songs, to Helen Pizzey for her wonderful words, to Rónán Collins for his continued collaboration and friendship, and to the Meath Foundation for its continued support of these valuable collaborations.
